Alcatraz Island & Pier 39

Our next stop in San Fran was Alcatraz. It was a short ride over to the Island but I was excited to take a boat across the bay and be out on the water.
Downtown San Francisco and the daily fog that rolls in

As we get closer to Alcatraz - it has such a creepy feeling. The wind picked up and the temperature dropped quite a bit. So glad I had a jacket with me.
We took part in the 45min audio tour featuring narrations by actual correctional officers and prisoners who lived and worked on the Island.

One of the more famous prisoners is Al Capone. His mobster career ended in 1931, when he was convicted for income-tax evasion. (I thought he was in for murder)
Jeremy had to duck to get into the cell
The island also provided housing for the prison staff and their families. How scary would that be to be a child living on the same island with the prisoners!
The Bay Bridge

We walked the famous Pier 39

Lots of Military Ships at the Wharf
The smells of baking sourdough bread drew us in to Boudin Bakery
Largest Bakery I have ever seen!!!

It was fun to watch the baker through the window
The sourdough is made fresh everyday using the same recipe since 1849.
Their most popular bread is their sculpted sourdough - cute little turtle!
